When one speaks of countries as a whole, they are called states. This results in the number of 194 countries worldwide. Even if the term states sounds very large, it does not mean that all states take up a large area or have many inhabitants.
Dwarf states such as Monaco, Lichtenstein or Andorra in Europe or Palau and Nauru in the Far East are included in this list.
There are 194 states recognized by the United Nations
Unofficially there are not only 194 states and countries but many more. Indeed, some countries are not recognized as independent by the international community. Abkhazia and South Ossetia can be cited as examples. Officially, the two republics belong to Georgia. But since they do not want to belong to Georgia, several wars have already been fought and the two small states have turned to Russia as a protective power.
Russia and a few other countries recognized the two countries as independent. But not by the vast majority of the other countries and that is why they are not represented in the United Nations.
Big differences between the countries
Not all countries have equal rights and can draw on the same resources or living conditions. Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. Russia, as a giant state, also shows very large differences in population. Rising poverty or people on the verge of starvation can be found everywhere. Especially in the countries of the third world, which are mostly to be found in Africa, technical progress and social supply are often not guaranteed. People die here every day of hunger and various diseases.
For these cases, the better-off countries have set up organizations to ensure better care for the people. They provide material, medical and educational help so that these people also have a chance. It is very controversial whether these organizations really help in the long term or rather do harm.
The Vatican State is the smallest state and therefore the smallest country on earth. Instead of explicitly differentiating itself from the other countries, it is located in the middle of Rome, i.e. Italy. The Pope lives here and conducts his business from there.
In order to be able to travel to another country, it is necessary to have a passport outside the EU. The German passport is one of the passports that allows most entries into other countries without a visa.
